THE LAST HAZELNUT
Atop a tree, the very top,
A worried face –
A sad little squirrel sits
Perched in place.
I think that down her cheeks I see
A few tears roll,
As she searches for a hazelnut
To crunch quite whole.
The leaves are red and yellow now
The autumn’s here,
And all the hazelnuts up there
Are gone I fear.
She must have dropped the little nut
She found before,
Now the branches are all barren,
There are no more.
POSLEDNJI LEŠNIK
Na drvetu, čak na vrhu,
Tužna lica
Sedi jedna zabrinuta
Veverica.
Čini mi se i suze joj
Licem klize, –
Poslednji je lešnik htela
Da zagrize;
Jesen pozna, većem žuti
List na grani,
Sad lešnika nema više,
Svi pobrani.
I poslednji što ga našla
Izmače se, –
Ni oraja nigde nema,
Ne vide se.
